- Covers all U.S. citizens
- Similar to current coverage for Federal employees, including members of Congress
- Individuals choose a health plan to administer their healthcare
- ELIMINATES employer-based insurance, creating a huge economic stimulus
- Administered by a Regional Board of Governors
- Disputes resolved through an arbitration board, instead of lawsuits
- Medicare and Medicaid would eventually be phased out by attrition
I am an experienced ICU nurse with a Masters Degree in Nursing, and an MBA in Healthcare Administration. I am frustrated by the limitations of the current healthcare debate going on in the U.S. These are my thoughts and feelings about the Fundamental Flaws of our healthcare system, and the proposed changes.

Healthcare Vouchers
The best solution I've found for reforming the healthcare system is Healthcare Vouchers. Please see the link for details. Here are my favorite parts of this system, as proposed by Dr. Fuchs (professor emeritus of Health Policy at Stanford Univ) and Dr. Ezekiel Emanuel (Bioethics Committee, NIH):

It would be great to phase out Medicare and Medicaid as they are unConstitutional. Healthcare vouchers are also unConsttitutional. Congress has certain enumerated powers and this is not one of them. Remember checks and balances - to keep the government under control? What is the point of having a written Constitution (a contract) if we are going to ignore it? We might as well say the governemtn can do whatever it wants and we the people have no rights unless the government chooses to be nice to us. GOOD LUCK WITH THAT WITH A GOVERNMENT THAT HAS NO EXTERNAL CONTROLS!

In this case, "the government" is Congress, who would establish guidelines. It would be administered through regional boards (non-governmental entity, but appointed officials). It is not just the big, bad govt dictating healthcare decisions. The government's role would simply be to determine specific dollar amounts for each citizen to receive for basic healthcare costs. The money would go directly to the health plan of the consumer's choice.
ReplyDeleteAnd yes, I do think that in this case, with the huge inequities and disparities in access to healthcare, I DO think that the govt needs to ensure equity in access to basic care. Medical care does not belong in the "free market" to begin with. Health is not a commodity.
